Hopewell Quarry Swim Test Protocol:
The swim test at Hopewell Quarry is an essential safety measure due to the unique characteristics of the Quarry's deep, dark waters. Unlike traditional swimming environments such as pools, ocean beaches, or lakes with shallow ends or gradual slopes, the quarry poses distinct challenges because it does not have one of these. Thus, it is imperative that individuals demonstrate strong swimming proficiency before entering. This ensures that everyone who enters the Quarry is a strong, confident swimmer.
The swim test comprises two components:
1. Swimming Proficiency: Candidates are required to swim approximately 80 yards using either the crawl or breaststroke strokes, executed properly. This component assesses fundamental swimming skills and endurance in a setting where a swimmer cannot touch the bottom or reach the side.
2. Treading Water Endurance: Candidates must tread water for a duration of 3 minutes near the lifeguard stand under the surveillance of a lifeguard. During this time, the candidate's chin must remain above the water level, and their head should not lean back into the water (“Wear the water like a necklace!”). This component evaluates the candidate's ability to maintain buoyancy and endurance in the Quarry's deep waters.
Remember: it is impossible to touch the bottom if you become fatigued while swimming in the Quarry
Successful completion of both components, under the guidance of the administering Lifeguard, indicates readiness for Quarry access. Upon passing the test, the candidate's name will be recorded, and subsequent re-testing is unnecessary.
***Please note that re-testing on the same day is not permitted, and refunds will not be issued.
We appreciate your understanding of these safety measures as we strive to ensure a secure environment for all Quarry visitors.
